Course Overview:
Explore how the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Risk Management Center (RMC) support risk assessments in dam safety, levee safety, and other risk activities. Hazard is one of the three key inputs to every risk assessment; therefore, accuracy and thorough analyses are essential. This course provides the knowledge and methods needed for a successful flood hazard analysis that can support a credible risk assessment.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will have the expertise to conduct a thorough flood hazard analysis for dam and levee risk management. This knowledge will lead to an increase in the quality of flood hazard products, more timely delivery of products, and more cost-effective products. In addition, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the theory behind methods used to quantify uncertainty in a frequency curve
  • Describe key hydrologic data sources and concepts for flood frequency
  • Produce flow and stage frequency curves with uncertainty for dams and levees
  • Perform sensitivities with flow-and stage-frequency analysis
  • Build a case for a flood hazard curve

Target Audience:
This course is designed for internal USACE and external mid-level hydraulic engineers or hydrologist practitioners within the Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Coastal (HH&C) Community of Practice (CoP) (or equivalent) with a beginner to intermediate level of flood hazard expertise and experience. The course may be appropriate for some senior-level hydraulic engineers or hydrologist practitioners (or equivalent) depending on their level of education and experience in flood hazard analysis for dam and levee safety.
